Notes on learning

We learn things by divide, conquer, combine.

To be noted, by dividing the thing, we do not separate it from the whole. The reason we devide things is not that things are divided, but that we can only learn thing little by little. We do not accept things immediately, but by accumulating and changing. Our concepts, understanding, are formed little by little, step by step, stage by stage. So when we learn things, we should always bear in mind the whole thing -- what in the end I am learning? We study the details carefully so that we can know the whole deeply. Study the details carefully without lost the whole, while study the whole by dividing, conquering and combining.

vision, Goal, Plan, Do

Vision means you know yourself, and focus what your want most, imagine it, form the wanting, desire, passion into a picture, a seeing.
Setting a goal means you transmute your vision into specific targets.
Plan means actual, definite ways that can be acted.

The glorious DO
We may have the wrong illusion that when we have set our plan, we have finished something. In the fact, having set the plan, we start doing something, we start a journey we have chosen, and by persistent work we lead the journey to the end.
We all admire the glorious moment when the destination is reached. (That is the reason we pay all our sweat for. ) However, the destination and the goal are not separated. It is the wanting, trying and struggling in the journey that the glorious lies the meaning.

A glimpse in the life time

Eric Hoffer说:"A man is likely to mind his own business when it is worth minding. When it is not, he takes his mind off his own meaningless affaires by minding other people's business."

It is not the killing in the show.
It's KILLING your time!
It's KILLING your time while you gladly watch it killing.

~quotation ~computing

"I think that it's extraordinarily important that we in computer science keep fun in computing. When it started out, it was an awful lot of fun. Of course, the paying customers got shafted every now and then, and after a while we began to take their complaints seriously. We began to feel as if we really were responsible for the successful, error-free perfect use of these machines. I don't think we are. I think we're responsible for stretching them, setting them off in new directions, and keeping fun in the house. I hope the field of computer science never loses its sense of fun. Above all, I hope we don't become missionaries. Don't feel as if you're Bible salesmen. The world has too many of those already. What you know about computing other people will learn. Don't feel as if the key to successful computing is only in your hands. What's in your hands, I think and hope, is intelligence: the ability to see the machine as more than when you were first led up to it, that you can make it more."

[reading]Turing lectures

I probably have spent too much of my life thinking about computers, but I do not regret it a bit. I was fortunate to enter the field of computing in its infancy and participate in its explosive growth. The rapid evolution of the underlying technologies in the past 30 years has not only provided an exciting environment, but has also presented a constant stream of intellectual challenges to those of us trying to harness this power and squeeze it to the last ounce. I hasten to say, especially to the younger members of the audience, there is no end in sight. As a matter of fact, I believe the next thirty years will be even more exciting and rich with challenges.

The three principal contributors to performance in scientific processors are the algorithm, the compiler, and the machine organization. When possible, the simultaneous optimization of these three factors holds the key to the hightest possible performance.

[reading]Understand, but not by comparison

In the final analysis, it is between you and God.  It was never between you and them anyway.
-- Mother Teresa

There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried.
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-reliance

If I am all the time measuring myself against you, struggling to be like you, then I am denying what I am myself. Therefore I am creating an illusion. When I have understood that comparison in any form leads only to greater illusion and greater misery, just as when I analyse myself, add to my knowledge of myself bit by bit, or identify myself with something outside myself, whether it be the State, a saviour or an ideology - when I understand that all such processes lead only to greater conformity and therefore greater conflict - when I see all this I put it completely away. Then my mind is no longer seeking. It is very important to understand this. Then my mind is no longer groping, searching, questioning. This does not mean that my mind is satisfied with things as they are, but such a mind has no illusion. Such a mind can then move in a totally different dimension. The dimension in which we usually live, the life of every day which is pain, pleasure and fear, has conditioned the mind, limited the nature of the mind, and when that pain, pleasure and fear have gone (which does not mean that you no longer have joy: joy is something entirely different from pleasure) - then the mind functions in a different dimension in which there is no conflict, no sense of `otherness'.
Verbally we can go only so far: what lies beyond cannot be put into words because the word is not the thing.

(Genius only means hard-working all one's life.  --Mendeleyer , Russian Chemist)
(The reward of a thing well done, is to have done it. -- Ralph Waldo Emerson)
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." -- Marianne Williamson
"Stay foolish. Stay hungry!" --The Whole Earth Catalog, quoted in Steve Jobs's speech in Stanford
"When you settle, you choose mediocrity. Don't settle for the best of the worst. Keep looking. Don't settle for something that's barely okay. Push to make it better. Don't settle for average work from others when exceptional is needed. And don't settle for delivering good when you're capable of better. Expect more from yourself. Then expect more from others." -- Don't Settle by Nan S. Russell

[reading]discipline

...discipline is the act of the learning all the time.
-- Jiddu Krishnamurti [链接]

The root meaning of that word "discipline" is to learn; and you cannot possibly learn if you are merely conforming, or suppressing, or controlling. So one has to understand again the meaning of the word "learning". Because if there is no right discipline, the mind cannot possibly find an answer to this, the answer in which is implied the meaning, the structure, the whole of life.
To understand there must be discipline. Please follow this a little bit; give your attention. Understanding is not the outcome of the intellect, or of emotion, of sentiment. As we said, understanding comes when the mind is really very, very quiet; has no movement at all in any direction. When you observe a tree, if you have ever done it, when you look at a tree, your mind never observes the tree; it observes the image it has created about a tree; and that image is always moving; it is never quiet. It is being added to and taken away from. It is only when the mind is very quiet, really observant, without any movement, that it observes the actual fact of the tree.
-- Jiddu Krishnamurti, Ojai 1966, 2nd of 6 talks [链接]

ipv6

The reward of a thing well done, is to have done it.

[reading]freedom from the known

In order to observe the movement of your own mind and heart, of your whole being, you must have a free mind, not a mind that agrees and disagrees, taking sides in an argument, disputing over mere words, but rather following with an intention to understand - a very difficult thing to do because most of us don't know how to look at, or listen to, our own being any more than we know how to look at the beauty of a river or listen to the breeze among the trees.
...
It is one of the most difficult things in the world to look at anything simply. Because our minds are very complex we have lost the quality of simplicity. I don't mean simplicity in clothes or food, wearing only a loin cloth or breaking a record fasting or any of that immature nonsense the saints cultivate, but the simplicity that can look directly at things without fear - that can look at ourselves as we actually are without any distortion - to say when we lie we lie, not cover it up or run away from it.

If you see the danger of your conditioning merely as an intellectual concept, you will never do anything about it. In seeing a danger as a mere idea there is conflict between the idea and action and that conflict takes away your energy. It is only when you see the conditioning and the danger of it immediately, and as you would see a precipice, that you act.
